Huginn. Your agents are standing by.

One of the first web apps I wrote would scrape web pages and notify you via email when they changed. I put a lot of effort in to it, but it never really worked that well. If only Huginn would have existed back then...

Scraping web pages and notifying you of changes is just one in an ever growing list of things Huginn can do for you. What is Huginn?

a system for building agents that perform automated tasks for you online. They can read the web, watch for events, and take actions on your behalf. Huginn's Agents create and consume events, propagating them along a directed graph. Think of it as a hackable Yahoo! Pipes plus IFTTT on your own server.

Who doesn't want a hackable Yahoo! Pipes plus IFTTT on their own server? Here are just a few things it can do, to whet your whistle (full list):

  • Track the weather and get an email when it's going to rain (or snow) tomorrow
  • Watch for air travel or shopping deals
  • Track your location over time

Huginn is a Rails app with one of those shiny new "Deploy to Heroku" buttons so getting started with your own server should be a breeze.

The project has over 60 contributors to-date and they're actively seeking more. Their call to arms:

All contributions are encouraged! You could make UI improvements, add new Agents, write documentation and tutorials, or try tackling issues tagged with #help-wanted.

If you give Huginn a try, tweet at us and tell us what cool stuff it's doing for you. We'll shoot you an RT :)
