Choosing tools

You’re working on a home improvement project. You can choose max. 5 tools. Which ones do you pick?
Sort of depends on what the home improvement project is, yeah? If the gig is repairing the toilet tank gasket, I’m likely not going to need my circular saw. But what if I really love my circular saw?

I agree 110% with what author Brad Frost is saying here - we have a tendency in our world to get caught up in which tools we like and try to apply them to every situation and rarely ask what the right tools are for any particular job.

Reducing motion with the picture element

The prefers-reduced-motion media query is a great tool for improving accessibility and helping users with visual impairments that make animations and such hard to follow, but did you know you can use it inside a picture element with a srcset? Brad writes:

This technique would definitely be helpful for posts with embedded animated GIFs in it. Authors would have to grab a static frame of a GIF as a fallback, so there’s a bit of extra work involved, but the technical execution is pretty dang straightforward.

What would be even cooler is if blogging and social media services did this automatically…

Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air

For all of our #applenerds out there — I haven’t read this fully (though it’s probably a ~3-5 min read) Brad touched on some key sticking points we didn’t fully cover on our recent Spotlight episode on Apple’s Fall 2018 Mac/iPad event.

Here’s one pro that stood out to me:

The bevel is back, baby. — one of the best things about this machine is the nice slope that doesn’t hurt my writs while typing. This was one of the biggest things I noticed when I switched from my original MacBook Air to a MacBook Pro, and I’m happy to return to a comfortable typing environment.

If you’re a MacBook Pro user, have you been considering the switch to a MacBook Air?

My struggle to learn React

Brad Frost shared lessons learned after Dan Abramov reached out when he saw Dan tweet in frustration about learning React. Brad Frost writes on his personal blog:

Dan has been hugely helpful at helping me unpack React, its ecosystem, its syntax, and its conventions. My first conversation with Dan allowed me to do some soul searching as to why I’ve been having such a tough time learning React. Turns out, the reasons for my inability to wrap my head around React are many…

If you have or you are struggling to learn React, maybe you’ll resonate with Brad’s story.
