What do we want from a web browser?
A hoy hoy! Our old friend Nick Nisi does his best to bring up TypeScript, Vim & Tmux as many times as possible while we discuss a new batch of web browsers, justify why we like the ones we do & try to figure out what itād take to disrupt the status quo of Big Browser.

i am another dev for whom desktop safari is their primary browser, and my biggest website incompatibility issues seem to arise from the fact that safari blocks 3rd party cookies by default. for example, i can only access google docs via a private browsing window and then logging in fresh (if required to access the doc); otherwise, i get a āWeāve detected a problem with your cookie settingsā error page, and iām pretty sure that the āproblemā they detect is that 3rd party cookies are disabled. note that chrome announced plans to block 3rd party cookies back in 2022, but then delayed the rollout to 2023, and have now delayed it again to 2024.
a big part of the reason that i use safari is that i have terrible browser tab hygiene. my primary mechanism for saving pages or conference talks or whatever content to look at later is keeping it open in a browser tab, so right now, for example, i have 52 windows open with 136 tabs, and safari somehow limits the memory usage of all of those windows and tabs to approximately the same amount of memory that chrome consumes to render around 5 tabs. the other two biggest reasons are handoff between my iPhone/iPad and mac and apple pay, but even without those features, i would still use safari just for its efficient memory usage.

Thatās a lot of tabs! I do similar wrt keeping them open until I read/consume/address whateverās in the tab, but I also have a practice of constant pruning and declaring bankruptcy every once in awhile.

BTW I am one of those that love @adamstacās changelog++ voice š
And @jerodsantoās comment of ācloser to the metalā š
Even though IIRC you two had pointed it out that you donāt know what metal it would be closer to š¤£
Iām personally not a changelog++ member yet, but I just canāt personally afford it yet š

My sister recently got a Mac and Safari told her she couldnāt open any websites because her device was full , but she had plenty of space. I sent her the curl command to download the Firefox dmg. I donāt love Firefox, but I donāt know what else I could have recommended if Safari refuses to work.
