Goodbye Atom. Hello Zed.
This week we’re talking with Nathan Sobo about his next big thing. Nathan is known for his work on the Atom editor while at GitHub. But his work wasn’t finished when he left, so…he started Zed, a high-performance multiplayer editor that’s engineered for performance. And today, Nathan talks us through all the details.

I’m a software developer. I like learning stuff. I think space is cool. I want astronautical engineering to be my final career. We’ll see what happens.

I love Pulp Fiction, but a Zed reference would be bad, because “Zed is dead baby. Zed is dead”.
Hopefully, Zed stays live, and speaking of live, isn’t their competitive advantage already addressed by VS Code Live Share? Maybe Zed edges VS Code by offering similar collaboration features with higher performance?

From what I can tell, Nathan’s vision for Zed’s collab stuff is different (more ambitious?) than VS Code’s live share stuff… but for now that vision isn’t actually in Zed so it’s hard to compare apples to apples.
