This interactive dashboard was created by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University to visualize and track reported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in real time. The data collected and displayed are freely available on GitHub.

The dashboard, first shared publicly on Jan 22, illustrates the location and number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, deaths, and recoveries for all affected countries. It was developed to provide researchers, public health authorities, and the general public with a user-friendly tool to track the outbreak as it unfolds.

The dashboard reports cases at the province level in China; at the city level in the USA, Australia, and Canada; and at the country level otherwise. During Jan 22–31, all data collection and processing were done manually, and updates were typically done twice a day, morning and night (US Eastern Time). As the outbreak evolved, the manual reporting process became unsustainable…

Given the popularity and impact of the dashboard to date, we plan to continue hosting and managing the tool throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 outbreak and to build out its capabilities to establish a standing tool to monitor and report on future outbreaks.

I recently used Elliot Hesp's Responsive-Dashboard to build an admin for one of my clients. Then he sent me an email telling me how awesome I am. (open source ftw!)

The dashboard is wired up to use Angular (there's also a jQuery version here) and it's quite easy to customize for your needs.

Paul Asmuth has released FnordMetric, a great looking tracking dashboard app that lets you measure and visualize events within your application.

FnordMetric ships with a standalone webserver, and sports a nice Ruby DSL:

The team at Paperless Post has released a nice looking dashboard frontend to Graphite the Django-based real-time graphing system. Graphiti was developed in Sinatra and uses Redis to store graphs as JSON blobs. Users can arrange graphs into collections or dashboards that map to a URL slug.

The front end is a single page app built with Sammy.js, featured way back in Episode 0.2.2.

The team give some background on Graphiti on their blog. Check the project README for setup instructions and ways to contribute.

Rich Hong’s Dashboard app for the iPad was recently submitted to the App Store.
Apple rejected the app, so Rich decided to open source it.

The Puppet Dashboard is a Puppet web interface that provides node management and reporting tools. Nodes can be exported in YAML format, allowing the dashboard to be used as an external node classification tool.

Requires ruby >= 1.8.1 and sqlite3 (by default).

It allows you to monitor systems, services, and important information that you otherwise might keep browser tabs open for, the kinds of things you don’t always need visible, but do check in on every now and then.

I’ve been closely watching CodeSandbox and have been thoroughly impressed with the work Ives van Hoorne and the 75+ contributors have put into this online code editor for … React, Preact, Vue, and more.

I’ve been thinking about getting Ives on Founders Talk to talk about the business model behind CodeSandbox. It seems to have this interesting self baked, pay what you want, Patron model to cover the expenses of CodeSandbox. Most of the features are free with limits, and being a “Patron” lifts those limits + extra features, and supports the costs and development efforts.

Our mission is to deliver a user-friendly, clear and easy administration panel, that can be used by both, simple websites and sophisticated systems.

I clicked through their entire demo on my phone over the weekend and was quite impressed. I even got a little jelly over a few components we could benefit from in our admin…

Ben Hoyt shares his experience switching two of his side projects from on an EC2 instance to Fly.io:

It took me about an hour to figure out the basics of Fly.io and move the simpler project, and a couple of evenings to move the more complex one. Fly.io handles the annoying reverse proxy and SSL stuff, deployment is as simple as fly deploy, and there’s a nice dashboard on Fly.io to show me what’s going on…

I’m only a few weeks into using Fly.io to host my side projects, but I’m very happy with their product so far. I was quite happy to delete the 500 lines of Ansible scripts, systemd unit files, and Caddy config files.

It also made me smile to finally stop the EC2 instance and bump my AWS bill down from $9 per month to about 10 cents per month (I still use S3 for user-uploaded images and for backups). I have nothing against EC2 and would use it again for certain things, but for small web applications, Fly.io seems like a great fit.

Podman Desktop installs, configures and keeps Podman up to date on your local environment. It provides a system tray, to check status and interact with your container engine without losing focus from other tasks. The desktop application provides a dashboard to interact with containers, images, pods and volumes but also configures your environment with your OCI registries and network settings. Podman Desktop also provides capabilities to connect and deploy pods to Kubernetes environments.

This week we’re peeking into the future again — this time we’re looking at the future of modern code review and workflows around pull requests. Jerod and Adam were joined by two of the co-founders of Graphite — Tomas Reimers and Greg Foster.

Graphite is an open-source CLI and code review dashboard built for engineers who want to write and review smaller pull requests, stay unblocked, and ship faster. We cover all the details – how they got started, how this product emerged from another idea they were working on, the state of adoption, why stacking changes is the way of the future, how it’s just Git under the hood, and what they’re doing with the $20M in funding they just got from a16z.

B. Cameron Gain on The New Stack:

Despite an ample amount of documentation and demos made available by Grafana Labs and community members, Grafana can be a challenge to set up (although those that do get its dashboards working generally sing its praises). Many manual configurations and steps are required when installing the different dashboard options. Once installed, many users can be overwhelmed with the number of logs and other data to process for monitoring and observability.

Grafana sure does produce pretty (useful) dashboards 👇, but I do find it overwhelming at times.

Grafana Labs announced a $220 million Series C investment round yesterday at a $3 billion valuation. I had Raj Dutt, CEO of Grafana Labs, on Founders Talk late last year — should I get him back on?

As with our previous rounds in 2019 and 2020, this funding will enable us to focus on accelerating the development of our open source observability platform and supporting the success of our community and our customers.

Here’s one example of how we’re pushing toward those goals: Earlier this year, we launched an “actually useful,” forever-free tier of Grafana Cloud that provides the industry’s most generous no-cost, fully managed observability stack, with 50GB of Loki logs, 10,000 series of Prometheus metrics, and 3 Grafana dashboard users included. Now, we’re adding 50GB of traces to the free plan, leveraging our Grafana Tempo OSS project, which recently became generally available for production use.

Peanut provides a REST API, Admin Dashboard and a command line tool to deploy and configure the commonly used services like databases, message brokers, graphing, tracing, caching tools … etc. It perfectly suited for development, manual testing, automated testing pipelines where mocking is not possible and test drives.

Under the hood, it works with the containerization runtime like docker to deploy and configure the service. Destroy the service if it is a temporary one.

Technically you can achieve the same with a bunch of yaml files or using a configuration management tool or a package manager like helm but peanut is pretty small and fun to use & should speed up your workflow!

there are a lot of AWS services available. And I do mean: a LOT. Currently, there are 163 (!) different services that are available from the Amazon Dashboard, each with their own way of working, difficulties, catches and best practises.

What follows is one-line descriptions of all 163 AWS services. MSK? Kafka as a service. Amazon Connect? AWS call center platform. And so on.

The dashboard consists of tiles which are, under the hood, Livewire components. They can update themselves via polling.

You can use any of the pre-packaged tiles or create your own.

José and the Phoenix team just announced this cool new dashboard for monitoring real-time performance of your production Phoenix systems. I’ll be setting this up and kicking the tires on changelog.com ASAP.
