Gergely Orosz joined Adam for a conversation about his journey as a software engineer. Gergely recently stepped down from his role as Engineering Manager at Uber to pursue his next big thing. But, that next big thing isn’t quite clear to him yet. So, in the meantime, he has been using this break to write a few books and blog more so he can share what he’s learned along the way. He’s also validating some startup ideas he has on platform engineering. His first book is available to read now — it’s called The Tech Resume Inside Out and offers a practical guide to writing a tech resume written by the people who do the resume screening. Both topics gave us quite a bit to talk about.

Vue.js is an approachable, versatile, performant, and progressive framework to build user interfaces with. This core library is focused on building the view layer only. It uses the goodies of Angular (such as template syntax) and React (such as Virtual DOM) and adds a few more enhancements on top.

… Another bonus point of it is that migrating to it is really easy. You just need to add a script tag to your page and you’re good to go.

Most people are modest about their contributions in the workplace. We also forget how important our contributions are. Then, when it comes time for recognition, you’ve forgotten, others didn’t notice because they don’t understand all the details and moving parts, and work just moves on. What do you do if/when your work goes unnoticed? Here’s what Julia Evans suggests…

Instead of trying to remember everything you did with your brain, maintain a “brag document” that lists everything so you can refer to it when you get to performance review season! This is a pretty common tactic – when I started doing this I mentioned it to more experienced people and they were like “oh yeah, I’ve been doing that for a long time, it really helps”.

Where I work we call this a “brag document” but I’ve heard other names for the same concept like “hype document” or “list of stuff I did” :).

BONUS — Julia included a basic template for a brag document at the end of the post.

Matthias Endler shares his Vim experience by looking back after using the venerable text editor for 10 years. Would he go back and learn it all over again?

On one side, I would say no. There’s a steep learning curve in Vim and seeing all those modern IDEs become better at understanding the user’s intent, editing text became way easier and faster in general.

On the other side, Vim is the fastest way for me to write down my thoughts and code. As a bonus, it runs on every machine and might well be around in decades to come. In contrast, I don’t know if the IntelliJ shortcuts will be relevant in ten years (note: if you read this in the future and ask yourself “What is IntelliJ?”, the answer might be no).

Definitely click through to read his takeways, too. Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that the JS Party panel went deep on Vim (by accident?) for the next episode.

mdncomp shows MDN browser compatibility data and documentation in an instance right on the command line to see if a feature is supported or not in target browsers. It can list an excerpt from MDN documentation, provide a link, and optionally go directly to that page, if needed.

When Zach isn’t going on and on about web fonts, he’s making great open source software. His newest project, Eleventy, has successfully renewed my interest in static site generators. It feels much more intuitive than I remember Jekyll being (it’s been a few years) and the fact that it supports many different template engines makes it easy to jump in.

Zach was also recently awarded an Open Source Peer Bonus from Google for his work on Eleventy.

If you aren’t happy with the current process monitoring tools out there, check out Eye. It uses Celluloid to provide multi-threaded process monitoring that behaves very similarly to Bluepill. One valuable addition is the ability to get more information about the processes running:

Wry is a command-line tool for Mac OS X 10.7+ that solves that problem by bringing App.net to the command line. Installing Wry couldn’t be easier especially if you’re using homebrew.

First run this to make sure everything is up to date.

$ brew doctor

Next, simply type:

$ brew install wry

In seconds you’ll have Wry installed and can add authorization

$ wry authorize

Copy and paste your authorization code from the App.net website and you’re done. Yes, it’s that simple. You can also download and install the zip file yourself.

Once it’s installed, type wry to see a list of supported commands.

The wry commands are:
   authorize   Authorize with App.net
   block       Block a user
   commands    List available commands
   delete      Delete a post
   download    Download a file
   find        Finds users
   follow      Follow a user
   followers   List the users following a user

The list of commands supported by Wry is impressive. After reaching out to Rob, to let him know how much I enjoyed using it, he told me that private messaging and patter room support was released with version 1.5. Just an added bonus to an already great tool.

One of the worst things about git is that it allows you to do whatever you want.

This has lead to a bunch of different ‘workflows’ for managing an open source project. I remember when “Git Flow” hit the scene, and everyone was mega-excited by it. Then, GitHub themselves fired back with “GitHub flow,” which was a bit simpler and talked about how they handle things.

Here’s Yet Another Entry into this ongoing saga: “On GitHub and Workflows” Basically, it’s somewhere in between the two: you have three branches, representing production, staging, and development. On top of development, you work like GitHub Flow, and when things go from development -> staging and staging -> production, there’s an opportunity for a last code review.

As a bonus, there’s a little script at the bottom for making pull requests from the command-line with hub. Neat! We originally saw this from this tweet by @moo9000.
